Note that I did not say “homeless.” Our home just has wheels!
The house in Michigan is sold, done, gone. What a relief. It was a more arduous, time-consuming process than it should have been due to a goofy real estate agent (theirs, not ours!) and FHA rigmarole. We had to complete a few projects — remotely! — to satisfy the buyers and the appraiser.
Final papers were prepared by the title company and emailed to us on Monday here in San Antonio. We printed them out, took them to a notary for the required signatures, and sent them FedEx overnight. The buyers competed the process on Tuesday, and the money was wired into our account that same night.
Hallelujiah!
Sadly, the check from the mortgage payout was pretty lean. Technically, we lost a lot of money over the 17 years we owned the house.
Area home values really bottomed out after the 2007 recession and have not really rebounded. The house was appraised for 2/3 what we paid for it, and the final sale price reflects that.
Factoring in what we paid and invested and subtracting the payout, we essentially rented the house for roughly $1,300/month. Meh.
I don’t think I ever want to own a home again. The American Dream looks a lot different in this millennium than it did in the last one.
Many thanks to Gini Havermahl, our agent, who went above and beyond to help us pull this off.
I’m sorry to hear that you took a loss on your house. While we did not lose money, we did not make as much as we could have on our sale. However, you are no longer pouring money down a black hole any more and what you make you can keep.
My wife’s brother sometimes mentions his “homeless” sister. We always remind him the we are not homeless, just houseless!
Safe travels!
Thanks Robert. The economy is just another of the reasons why we decided to make this lifestyle change. I would have liked more of a safety net, but at least we have money in the bank and a good credit rating. I had friends and family who had to walk away from their homes during the crash. While that was tempting, I’m glad we stuck it out.
Congratulations and hope you are having a great time here in Texas. Hopefully having time to really explore the area.
Hi Jaye! Yes and no. Because we’re still getting used to the lifestyle and Shawn’s work is a little hectic, we’ve not explored as much as I would like. But I have taken a few solo day trips and done some exploring. And honestly, peace and quiet to read and write has been wonderful!
A new lifestyle begins! Congratulations!!!
We, too, are houseless, for nearly 4 years now. We are truly amazed at the number of homes on wheels owners we have met in our travels. And amazed also at how easy it is to get used to such small space. After house sitting through our colder Canadian winter, in bigger spaces, we have come to treasure the smaller space of our 35′ motor home and love the freedom to go wherever/whenever. Happy travels.
